ALICE (Kiii News) -

Alice police are on the hunt for a man who they say stole a woman's car while her three-year old child was still inside. Thankfully, the child is safe at home.

Investigators said the man ditched the car on South Stadium Street just a couple of miles away.

According to police, the mother was dropping off her 10-year old child at the sitter's house, on the corner of Catherine and Woodlawn, at around 5:30 a.m. The toddler was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle when its mother saw the suspect run to the vehicle and drive away.

The mother tried to yell at the suspect that her child was in the car, but he took off. She immediately called the police.

The Alice Police Department searched all over the city for the vehicle. They even asked for assistance from the Department of Public Safety and the FBI. 40 minutes later, police found the car parked at an apartment complex on South Stadium Street, with the three-year old girl in her car seat.

Police want parents to learn from this mistake, and never leave a child unattended in the car, even if it's for a split second.

"Don't take these types of chances with your children," Alice Police Chief Albert Martinez said. "We are very fortunate that the child was left unharmed and in a parking lot where officers could quickly and properly locate the vehicle."

EMS did make sure the three-year old girl was okay before she was released to her mother.

The suspect did steal a purse from the vehicle, and is still on the run. If you have any information, please contact the Alice Police Department.
