The academic team at Incarnate Word Academy High School has once again proved their skills, placing first over the weekend at an academic competition in Austin.
They took home the top prize at the TAPPS Academic District Competition. It is an event that features some of the brightest minds from private and parochial schools. They beat out Hyde Park Baptist High School by a score of 218 to 65. They now move on to state, a championship they have won five out of the last six years.
"We have to study our respective subjects that we competed in. I, this year, competed in ready writing, social studies and current events. So that was three practices every week," IWA senior Derek Ficenec said. "It's a lot of hard work and a lot of study, but it definitely pays off, because we did very well at district this year."
A total of 35 students make up the IWA academic team. Kiii News wishes them all the best at state.
