Pope Benedict XVI will resign at the end of this month.

Officials with the Vatican made the announcement this morning.

A spokesperson says the Pontiff is stepping down due to "advanced age" and no particular illness.

Pope Benedict is 85-years old.

He is the first pope to resign since 1415.
