Portland Shooting Survivor Kristene Chapa Speaks

Posted: Updated:
SINTON (Kiii News) -

It has been nearly a year since two teenagers were shot at a park in Portland, and the gunman is still on the loose.

Mollie Olgin, 17, was fatally wounded, and her girlfriend, 18-year old Kristene Chapa, was badly injured but is recovering. In fact, the Sinton High School graduate is scheduled to throw out the first pitch for her school's softball team on Tuesday.

Until Monday, Chapa has not said a word publicly about the shooting, her recovery, and the loss of a beloved friend. She agreed to talk to Kiii News Reporter Jessica James, who sat down with Kristene at her home.

Chapa is a very strong young woman. She survived a gunshot wound to the head, and at one point, doctors doubted that she would be able to walk again; but less than a year later, she is not only back on her feet, but on Tuesday she will be back on the softball field with many of her former teammates.

Portland police continue to follow up on leads, but have not yet made any arrests in the case. In an effort to stir up new tips, a Crime Stoppers video was released at the end of last year.

It's been a long and difficult road for Chapa, but she continues to make progress everyday. And is grateful to the support she's received from friends, family, and the community.

Despite donations, the Chapa family still faces about $40,000 in outstanding expenses. If you'd like to help, there are two ways to make a donation:
