CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

If you have been waiting for news about construction of the new Schlitterbahn Waterpark on Padre Island, that wait is almost over.

Schlitterbahn co-owner Jeff Henry confirmed Tuesday that groundbreaking for the $41 million project is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Padre Isles Country Club.

At that event, Henry says the final drawings will be presented along with details on lodging and restaurant facilities that will be part of the overall project.

The Schlitterbahn Waterpark is just the first-phase of a half-billion dollar resort development that will be going up over the next 20 years on both sides of Park Road 22. If all goes as planned, the waterpark should be up and running by March of 2014.
