Residents in the 5400 block of Carroll Lane were awakened just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, when a 30-year old woman with three children in her vehicle crashed into a car and a tree.
The woman, identified as Melissa Lopez, was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Police caught up with her at a nearby apartment complex.
Witnesses said she tried to remove the license plates on her vehicle, and also tried to pass off her young children to someone in another vehicle.
"The most surprising thing was that the mother's first concern was trying to get away, rather than the safety of her children," said a nearby resident. "Because she called someone she must obviously live nearby and that person came and took those children out of the car, and then she lied to police that she was the only one in the car."
The children were taken to Driscoll Children's Hospital for treatment of facial cuts. The two people in the car that was hit were rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.
