City Council Signs Off on Deal to Move Coast Guard to Airport

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The U.S. Coast Guard is one step closer to moving its operations out to the airport. On Tuesday, City Council signed off on the deal to lease the government land at the airport.

It is a 20-year ground lease, with four five-year renewal options. Two companies with expertise on these types of private/public projects were brought in to get the facility built.

The Coast Guard will move out of its downtown office space, as well as its hangar at Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi.

Everyone is waiting on the government's General Services Administration to greenlight construction.

"What we're looking at is an 18 to 24-month construction period from the time the GSA gives us the go ahead, and sometime in late 2014 or 2015 we'll complete the project," Airport Director Fred Segundo said.

Airport officials said that 80-percent of the project will use local companies. They also feel that the 350 government workers moving out to the airport will help to bring convenience stores and perhaps a hotel or two out to the airport.
