Residents Bring City's Stray Dog Problem to Attention

Residents on the city's westside say it is a problem that is out of control -- stray and abandoned animals living on our streets.

It is a growing epidemic, and according to Animal Control, it's a major problem for our city.

Kiii News Reporter Bill Churchwell went Live with a preview of a 3News Special Report: Dog City USA.

On Mohawk Street, residents said it is not hard to find packs of dogs roaming around. They are not fenced in, and they're not on leashes. Many there are fed up with the problem.

"I'm tired of all these animals being out here, just mating and mating, producing so many dogs," concerned resident Norma Cansino said.

On Wednesday, Animal Control officers were in the middle of doing a sweep across the city, focusing on areas of town where there are high volumes of stray animal calls. On Mohawk, there was a report of at least 20 stray canines. In fact, the dogs had formed a pack, and residents said they are known to be aggressive.

"They get attacked," Cansino said. "That's why I report it. I see kids fighting them off, coming and going to school."

Animal Control officers get between 50-100 calls a day. Half of those calls are for reports of stray dogs.

At 10 p.m. Wednesday, 3News will examine what can be done to curb the issue, and what areas of town have the biggest stray dog problem.

    A driver loses control and crashes in between two barriers under the freeway. It happened at the Greenwood turn around and SPID earlier Saturday afternoon. CCPD says that the driver was speeding when he made the turn and lost control, getting stuck between the two barriers. Police say the impact caused the car to catch fire. The driver was not injured. He was given a ticket and the car will be impounded, that's because the driver did not have insurance.More >>
