Isles Softball Takes Weekend Finale Up in Waco

WACO, TX (Islanders Athletics) - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team cruised to a 6-4 victory over Northern Colorado today in the consolation game of the Miken Classic at Getterman Stadium. The Islanders' bats exploded for a season-high 12 hits to seal the final game of the weekend.

After dropping a 5-0 loss to the Bears in the opening game of the classic on Friday, the Islanders bounced back to out hit the Bears 12-5 behind Mickayla Cochran's three hits and two RBIs. The sophomore propelled the Islanders' offense going 3-for-4 with her second double of the season.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi also had stellar play from Hayley Galloway, Valerie Perez, and Cassie Carroll who all chipped in two hits apiece. Laura Phillips, Natalie Zarzabal andMichelle Sorenson each added one hit as well.

Bethany Slick (1-0) posted her first career start in the Islanders circle. The sophomore didn't allow a run until the sixth inning and gave up just four runs while tallying one strikeout. Constance Brandenburg came in for relief in the seventh inning and tallied one strikeout while allowing one hit. 

The Islanders came out strong in the top of the first with two hits. Cochran led the frame with a single to left field before Galloway reached on a hit by pitch. McKinney loaded the bases with a walk and Perez followed with a solo shot to right field. Phillips delivered a fielder's choice to third base before Carroll grounded out to second.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi jumped on board in the top of the second with two runs. Zarzabal walked to start things off and scored on an RBI double by Cochran. Galloway followed suit with a RBI single to right center to plate Cochran and give the Islanders a 2-0 lead.

The Islanders bats rolled on through the third to tack on three more runs on four hits to pad the Islanders lead to 5-0. Perez jumpstarted the top of the third with a single up the middle and Phillips ripped a shot to right field to put runners on the corners. Carroll then followed with the Islanders' third consecutive hit of the frame with a RBI single to right field to score Perez. The Islanders tallied two more runs after Potts loaded the bases with a walk and Sorenson singled to center to plate Phillips. The squad built a five-point cushion after Cochran grounded out to second to score Carroll.

Zarzabal delivered her first career homer in the fifth with a solo shot over the left field wall to post the Islanders' sixth run. Galloway followed with the Islanders' 10th hit of the game with a single to third base.

The Bears posted their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Northern Colorado's Melissa Marcovecchio reached on a 2-out walk and advanced to second on an illegal pitch. Kaitlyn Flynn followed with a single through the left side before Marcovecchio scored on a wild pitch.  

Northern Colorado came back in the final frame with three runs and two hits to pull within two however Constance Brandenburg retired the next three batters to escape with the Islanders ahead.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi improves to 2-8 while Northern Colorado drops to 3-7. The Islanders will return home to face Kansas on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Chapman Field before hosting the Best Western Marina Grand Islanders Classic on Friday, Feb. 22 through Sunday, Feb. 24. Kansas, Auburn, New Mexico and Southern University are all on tap to compete.
