Statewide Pay Raise for Texas Prison Employees Requested

Posted: Updated:
BEEVILLE (Kiii News) -

The McConnell Unit Prison in Beeville is still lacking staff and has nearly 200 job openings, all because of the Eagle Ford Shale boom.

To keep employees from leaving the prison, Lance Lowry with Texas Correctional Employees Union Employees has called for higher wages for Texas prison staffers.

"As Texas' energy economy expands with the refinery expansions and with the shale oil fracking, we are losing a lot of officers, and some units have dropped to 50-percent of staff," Lowry said.

Lowry said that they have asked state legislators to approve a 14-percent pay raise that would be implemented statewide for prison employees. The McConnell Unit has 10 supervisory positions available, as well as maintenance positions, food service positions, and others.

Gary Currie, the senior warden at the McConnell Unit, said they are having a tough time competing with the Eagle Ford Shale companies for those available workers. If approved, it could add an extra $300 to the paychecks of new and current correctional officers.
