South Texas Charity Quail Hunt Passes Million Dollar Mark

Posted: Updated:
KINGSVILLE (Kiii News) -

A local South Texas celebrity charity event reached a milestone this year. The South Texas Charity Quail Hunt, which is held every year at King Ranch, has surpassed the $10 million mark in money raised.

The celebrity event began some 20 years ago, when Nolan Ryan decided to help raise money for a baseball diamond at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Ever since, a special group of celebrities and athletes have come to Kingsville to raise money for South Texas.

The late Larry Hagman played a vital role for the event.

"Larry Hagman came at his own expense for 20 years," said Fred Bryant of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute. "He was an avid quail hunter, I'll say that. So there was a bit of a motive, but he had a lot of other things he could have done besides come to Kingsville, TX, and be a part of it. So he would bring a genie bottle, you know, I Dream of Genie, and it's probably worth $50, and he would work that crowd, and he'd get $4,000 for an item that's worth $50."

The money raised by the event goes to benefit Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg, HALO Flight and a couple of institutes at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
