An explosion led to a fire at the AkzoNobel Battleground plant at about 1 p.m.
A company spokesperson told Eyewitness News one contract employee was hurt and
transported to a hospital. The worker's condition has not been released.
Jeff Suggs, Emergency Coordinator with City of La Porte, said no
shelter-in-place orders were issued for residents of the surrounding
communities, but the neighboring plants did shelter their workers as a
precaution.
The AkzoNobel spokesperson said magnesium oxide was the material burning, and
called it a non-harmful nuisance dust. Eighty to ninety people were working at
the plant. They remained on site during the incident and awaited the all-clear
to return to work.
Suggs said firefighters had the situation under control, and the fire nearly
extinguished by 2 p.m.
Battleground/Independence Parkway was closed to traffic.
