Oil Rig Supply Vessel Runs Aground on San Jose Island
PORT ARANSAS (Kiii News) -
U.S. Coast Guard crews from Corpus Christi and Port Aransas jumped into action Monday afternoon to help an oil rig supply vessel that ran aground on San Jose Island.
Four people were onboard the vessel, which was carrying 8,000 gallons of fuel and another 100 gallons of lube oil. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and so far there has been no word of pollution damage.
"They were inbound to the Aransas jetty, and they suffered a propulsion, an engine casualty," said Daniel Deptula of the U.S. Coast Guard. "They proceeded to put the anchor down, and because of the offshore conditions, as we've been led to believe, the anchor was dragging on the bottom and it essentially put them onto that area near San Jose Island."
The salvation operation is expected to continue Tuesday morning.
