MATHIS (Kiii News) -

A deadly rollover accident on southbound I-37 just past Mathis overnight caused some serious problems on the road for first responders.

It was around 2:45 a.m. when a red car traveling south on I-37, reportedly at a high rate of speed, went off the edge of the road and flipped several times, ejecting the driver of the vehicle.

The driver, 24-year old Juan Carlos Ugalde of Lewisville, TX, was pronounced dead at the scene. His female passenger, 33-year old Eva McGee of San Antonio, was sent to the hospital via HALO Flight. Her injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, blocking off traffic and diverting drivers to an exit so they could travel along the access road instead.

At around 3 a.m., an 18-wheeler carrying crude oil and heading to Corpus Christi went around the barricade and hit a Mathis fire truck.

Then, at around 4:30 p.m., Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Judge Daniel Garcia was on the scene to pronounce the driver of that red vehicle dead. While he was there, a vehicle traveling northbound struck a pickup truck that was parked on the edge of the road, sending it flying toward Garcia.

Garcia was struck by the pickup and had to be sent by ambulance to an area hospital with broken bones.
