Local Police Make Preparations for Spring Break Crowds

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

We are now less than 24 hours from the unofficial kickoff of Spring Break, and it's a fair bet that most of the Spring Break crowd will be heading to our beaches.

From the bay to Padre Island, our city is about to be invaded by high school and college kids from around the country, and police say they are ready for the onslaught.

Kiii News Reporter Michael Gibson went Live from the Bayfront with the details.

Police say they will be setup and ready for Spring Break by 11 a.m. Friday. They will also be looking to make sure that those who drink too much are dealt with quickly.

Friday will also kick off a no-refusal weekend. Officers will be able to do a blood draw, and are going to have a judge sign off on some of those arrests by computer. It is a way to save time and money for officers who would have to drive from the beach to the jail, then to a hospital and back to jail.

Police officials said that this should allow officers to get back on the beach sooner than later.

"We do have beach craft available. There will be a boat in the water this year with some officers in it that we've never used before," said Commander John Houston of the Corpus Christi Police Department. "That will be out in the waterway, especially in the Packery Channel and the beach where most of the kids hit."

Also of note, no dogs will be allowed on the beach, leashed or not. If you bring an animal, you will be asked to take the animal off of the beach. Couches and wooden pallets will also be prohibited.

And if you end up drinking too much this Spring Break, the folks at Apollo Towing are offering free towing throughout the Spring Break period for those who don't think they should be behind the wheel.

Apollo Towing is teaming up with L&F Distributors as part of a program they call "No Excuses." If you feel that you've had too much to drink, the company will tow you and your vehicle to wherever you are staying.

The program kicks off Friday night, and will run until March 17.

You can call Apollo Towing Service at 361-853-0003, so if you think you may end up needing their services, save that number in your phone now.
