Spring Break Arrives, City Prepares for Crowds

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Spring Break 2013 has arrived, and if and when the weather cooperates, the beaches are likely to be jam packed.

Of course, police will be out in force as well, making sure everyone follows the rules. It's always a delicate balance, enforcing the law without unnecessarily hassling people.

Kiii News Reporter Michael Gibson went Live from Padre Island with the details.

City crews were out bright and early Friday morning preparing the beach for the massive amount of traffic that is sure to hit over the next couple of weeks.

An emergency lane was put in place on Padre Island near Access Road 3 and Zahn Road, so that police and fire personnel can maneuver quickly through the crowd.

"We're expecting anywhere from 80,000 to 120,000 people here over the next 10 days," said Derek Herzog, beach superintendent for the City of Corpus Christi. "There really is no way to tell. It gets bigger and bigger every year, and we are expecting this year to be the biggest."

First responders said that, on a typical Spring Break day, they get about 50 calls.
