Man Bitten by Snake, Tries to Sell it at Pet Store

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

What would you do if you were bitten by a snake?

Most would head to the emergency room to get checked out, but on Friday afternoon one man who was bitten went to the pet store to try and sell the huge reptile.

Arturo Obregon said he and his family were at Lakeview Park at Holly and Rodd Field when he was bitten by a large snake.

"I just went at him instinctively, I guess," Obregon said. "I grabbed him by the tail and he came back around, but there's no swelling."

Rather than going to the hospital, he went to Balboa's Pet Store near Kostoryz and Staples to try and sell the creature.

However, when he found out the store owner would not buy the snake, Obregon took the snake outside and killed it.

Someone called 911 when they heard about the bite, but Obregon refused treatment.

"I have a lot of snakes, and he tried to sell it here at the store, and I told him, 'No, I'm not going to take the snake,'" said Severo Balboa, owner of Balboa's Pet Store. "He took it back in his car and he let it go here, and started smashing the head of the snake. I don't know why."

Paramedics and police arrived at the pet store looking for Obregon. Someone who had hear about the bite had called 911, but Obregon refused treatment.

Obregon did get into an argument with someone over his killing of the snake, but police said it is not a case of animal cruelty. Obregon got back into his sport utility vehicle and took off with the dead snake.

The pet shop owner could not determine what kind of a snake it was, but did say it was not poisonous.

Obregon did say he was going to go to the hospital to get checked out, because there is a risk of infection when you are bitten by a snake.
