Customs and Border Protection Thwart Cocaine Smuggling Attempts

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Two separate maritime smuggling attempts were disrupted by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Air and Marine and interagency partners between March 8-11.

More than 1,300 pounds of cocaine, with a street value of $90 million were seized as a result of the busts.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the first bust took place March 8 when an Office of Air and Marine crew aboard a Navy P-3 aircraft spotted a vessel 120 miles off the coast of Guatemala. The vessel appeared to be speeding north and contained numerous packages.

Another U.S. Navy P-3 aircraft was called in to pursue the speedboat, which then attempted to evade, but Guatemalan authorities were able to intercept the craft and take it back for further inspection.

The Customs and Border Protection crew was credited with stopping more than 650 pounds of cocaine from being smuggled.

The next day, a P-3 crew spotted a suspicious boat near Guatemala and reported it to interagency partners. That information was used to find and intercept the boat, which was carrying 661 pounds of cocaine in a small boat that was towed along behind it.

The U.S. Navy P-3 aircrafts responsible for these busts were launched out of Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi.
