Family Pet Found in Deadly House Fire in Need of Home

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Two weeks ago in Flour Bluff, crews were able to save the family dog from a house fire that took the lives of two people, but now the dog has no one to care for him.

The fire happened on the 400 block of Military Drive on March 7. When crews arrived on the scene, they found flames and heavy smoke pouring from the house. Later, officials found two people dead inside -- 49-year old Cheryl Delong and 81-year old Charles Delong III.

Officials are investigating the case as a possible murder suicide.

However, inside the home, under the bed, was the family pet, a dog named Hobo. He was unconscious but still breathing. Firefighters said he was gasping for air. They gave him oxygen and started external rubs, and finally he came to.

The dog got scared and ran from the scene, but a volunteer with People Assisting Animal Control was able to find him. They took him back to the shelter and a vet looked him over and treated him for smoke inhalation.

"We are very grateful the fire department did this," PAAC President Cheryl Martinez said. "They went the extra mile for an animal, which you would love everyone to do. We are so grateful this is happening in our city."

Right now, Corpus Christi Animal Control is looking for next to kin. They will be asking the family of the deceased to take Hobo in, but if they don't, he will be up for adoption in the next few days.

Hobo is seven-year old black Chow mix. He is very friendly, and because he was found inside the home, they believe that he was an indoor dog.
