Police Release Video of Suspect Mugging Elderly Woman

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Police have released surveillance video from a local HEB that shows the mugging of an 84-year old woman that occurred last week.

The mugging happened at the Port Street HEB. Surveillance tapes showed a small silver car pulling out of a parking space and driving toward the rear of the story.

84-year old Hortencia Martinez was walking toward a fence behind the store where there is an opening when a man in that silver car got out of the vehicle and ran toward her.

The man first grabbed at the woman's purse before running off, with Martinez in hot pursuit.

Police said surveillance footage showed the man as he was leaving the store before the mugging.

"So when she felt the tug, she turned around and said, 'Hey, that's my purse,'" Martinez said through a translator. "And she turned around and that's when she saw just the back of the guy. And he grabbed her purse, and that's when she tried to tug with him."

Martinez was shaken by the experience, but said that the man needed to get a job and not steal from people like her. Her neighbor, Ramona Ramirez, agrees it is not safe in their neighborhood anymore.

"I think she put her hand like this on her purse or something," Ramirez said. "Can't do that around here. You don't know who's walking around here."

Ramirez, who has also lived in the neighborhood for almost 60 years, said she has a warning for criminals.

"And they say the little old lady has a gun, and keep in mind, I might have it. I might not have it, right?" Ramirez said.

If you have any information on this mugging, please call Crime Stoppers at 361-888-8477.
