Taylor and Dawn Poitevent were blessed with twins about three weeks ago. Sadly, one of their preemies only lived 20 hours. Now, their lone daughter, Ainsley, is fighting for her life and needs blood and platelets in order to survive.
The parents said it took this crisis to make them truly understand the importance of donating blood.
"Ainsley continues every day to need plasma, platelets and blood products to continue her fight to save her life," Dawn Poitevent said. "She's not suppose to be here today, and against all odds she's still fighting. We just think it's very important for people to know how important those products are."
"There's other than just premature babies that need platelets, you know. So many people that suffer from cancer and diabetes, everything. Medical procedures which require platelets," Taylor Poitevent said. "We all know diabetes is a big thing in South Texas communities too, so."
"The one thing that Ainsley can do from her tiny little body, is she can be a spokesperson to say how important these little things can be within our community," Dawn said. "She's a fighter, and that's what she'd want to do, I'm sure."
The Coastal Bend Blood Center serves 13 medical facilities in a 10-county area. They require upwards of 120 donors every single day just to meet the demand.
