2013 Astros Spring Training: New Astro Chris Carter

KISSIMMEE, FL (Kiii Sports) - The Astros weren't done wheeling and dealing this offseason when Houston shipped Jed Lowrie off to new division rival Oakland for three players including big man Chris Carter.

Carter is expected to be the full time DH in Houston and if he keeps up the power he's shown here in Kissimmee, look out American League.

"I've been working in the cage with Bo (Porter), working on my back stride and getting my stride foot down early," Carter said. "Bo's done a good job here keeping everybody working hard, and working on the process just the little small details."

"Carter's done a lot of extra work. John Malle and Dan Radison, they've done a tremendous job getting some things cleaned up with him, and you're starting to see the power play," Astros' Manager Bo Porter said. "We knew once he got his timing down, he's got power to all fields."

Carter was traded for the third time in his baseball career, but Oakland was the only team he had ever played for on the major league level. The "Silent Giant" was surprised the Athletics were willing to part with him so quickly, but hopes he's found a home in Houston.

"I was shocked at first, but out here it's a good opportunity where I can play everyday, whereas over there was going to have to play platoon or only play against lefties, so I'm happy to be here."

The Astros are hoping big man Chris Carter can help fill a void in the DH role, and in the process show their new division rival the Athletics what they're missing.  Reporting from Astros' and Hooks' Spring Training in Kissimmee, Florida, Chris Thomasson, 3Sports.
