ALICE (Kiii News) -

A judge ruled that 45-year old Jose Gonzalez, who has been in prison since December after being found guilty of murdering his wife, must sign away parental rights.

It was in December of 2012 that the former Alice police officer was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He was found guilty of shooting his 31-year old wife, Leslie Morin, six times after breaking into her parents' home.

On Thursday, a family court judge issued a bench warrant for Gonzalez to be returned to Corpus Christi to sign over custody of his nine-year old son to his late wife's parents.

Gonzalez was given two life sentences to be served concurrently.
