Hooks Get Thrilling 3-2 Win Over Cardinals in Season Opener

Posted: Updated:

Corpus Christi (CC Hooks)- Ross Seaton picked up his first victory of 2013 and George Springer belted a two-run homer as Corpus Christi edged Springfield 3-2 Thursday before 6,264 at Whataburger Field.

Credit co-starter Jake Buchanan and closer Jason Stoffel with big assists as the Hooks rolled out Houston's prescribed "piggyback" starting pitcher scheme, where the opening pitcher throws five innings or 75 pitches and the second starter fills the first relief role.

Stoffel, who established a team record with 27 saves last year, struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth.

Seaton and Cardinals starter Richard Castillo were stingy at the outset, each permitting a hit through the first 2 ½ innings. That changed in the home third, Rene Garcia's one-out double down the left-field line preceding a Springer shot over the wall just left of the batter's eye.

The Cardinals immediately equalized. Jake Lemmerman slapped a double inside the first-base bag and came around when Ruben Gotay singled. With two away, Gotay scampered home on the front end of a double steal with Chris Swauger.

Corpus Christi moved up 3-2 in the fifth as Garcia's second double of the evening translated into the decisive run on a passed ball by Audry Perez.

Seaton worked five innings over 70 pitches (47 strikes). He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out two.  Buchanan, the beneficiary of two double plays, took over and tossed three scoreless innings

Castillo, who went a frame deeper than Seaton, gave up six hits and fanned five. Fifty-nine of his 86 pitches were strikes.
