Islanders Softball Swept By Lamar

BEAUMONT, TX (Islanders Athletics) - The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi softball team put together a three-run rally in the top of the fourth but Lamar answered with one of their own in the bottom of the sixth to win game three, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at Ford Park. The Islanders matched a season-high 13 hits and all nine Islanders batters recorded at least one hit apiece to propel the offense.

Mickayla Cochran, Lindsey Lyles, Michelle Sorenson and Dani Tefft all tallied a pair of hits for the Islanders (7-29, 2-13 SLC) while Valerie Perez chipped in her sixth double of the season.

The Lady Cardinals (18-23, 9-6 SLC) were led by Jenna Holland who went 2-for-3 and Stephanie Meeuwsen who 3-for-4. Both recorded home runs in the victory.

Lyles recorded the Islanders' first hit of the game in the opening frame. With two outs, the sophomore ripped a single to left field but Lamar pulled out of the inning with a punch out.

The Islanders got on board in the top of the second with one run on two hits to take an early 1-0. Perez led off the inning with a hit by pitch but was called out at second on a fielder's choice by Meagan McKinney. Natalie Zarzabal followed suit with a fielder's choice to land McKinney on second and she advanced to third on an error at second base. With runners on the corners, Sorenson drilled a RBI single to left field to plate McKinney and post the first run of the game. Tefft followed with a single to shortstop to load the bases, however Lamar's pitcher Shannon Millman retired the next two Islanders to end the frame.

Lamar evened the score at 1-1 with a solo home run by Holland in the bottom of the second and pushed ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third with a leadoff home run to right field by Meeuwsen.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi answered in the top of the fourth with three runs on five hits. Sorenson and Tefft jumpstarted the inning with back-to-back singles and both recorded stolen bases before Cochran stepped to the plate. The sophomore hit a RBI single to shortstop to plate Sorenson and knot the score at 2-2. Hayley Galloway followed with an infield single to load the bases for Lyles. The sophomore ripped a RBI single to left field to score Tefft and give the Islanders' the lead back, 3-2. With bases loaded, J.J. Jackson reached on a fielder's choice as Cochran was called out on the play. After an Islanders strikeout, McKinney kept the momentum going after she reached on a hit by pitch to score Galloway and pad the Islanders' lead to 4-2. Zarzabal followed with a ground out to end the offensive threat with bases loaded.

Lamar rallied back to take a 5-4 lead after a three run, four-hit bottom of the sixth. After Ashley Elicerio retired the first two batters, the Lady Cardinals recorded three straight singles to plate one run. After a walk loaded the bases, Holland singled to right field to plate two more runs and push the Lady Cardinals ahead. With runners on the corners, Elicerio recorded her fourth strikeout of the game.

Elicerio (2-15) took the loss for the Islanders in the circle. She allowed 10 hits, five runs, while walking five and striking out four in six innings.

Millman (12-10) picked up the victory for the Lady Cardinals. She allowed 13 hits, four runs, three of them earned, while striking out six in seven innings.

The Islanders will return home to host Sam Houston State in a three-game series on April 13-14 at Chapman Field.
