Hooks Come Back in 9th, Get Walk Off Win

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - Corpus Christi scored twice in the ninth to defeat Tulsa 4-3 Monday at Whataburger Field before 4,875.

Designated hitter Michael Burgess' third hit of the night - a bases-loaded single to right off Isaiah Froneberger - plated Ben Orloff with the decisive run. Burgess stepped up to bat after Froneberger issued a bases-loaded, game-tying walk to George Springer.

Froneberger (0-1) walked Enrique Hernandez to start the home ninth and struck Orloff, a pinch-hitter, with an inside delivery. Pinch-hitter Carlos Perez pushed the runners along with a sacrifice bunt before Froneberger intentionally walked Austin Wates to set up a force. Jiovanni Mier fanned for the second out before Springer's free pass on a 3-1 count.

Burgess then attacked the first pitch.

Patrick Urckfitz (1-0) picked up the victory with 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Hooks (4-1) used a combination of two walks and three singles while establishing an early 2-0 advantage. Drillers starter Tyler Matzek threw 30 first-inning pitches. He walked lead-off man Wates, who swiped second and scored on Springer's single. Springer later pilfered third and advanced home when Hernandez singled to right.

Back-to-back two-out doubles by Joey Wong and Delta Cleary, Jr., posted Tulsa's first run in the third.

Kyle Parker's first home run of 2013 - a fifth-inning lead-off shot off Jake Buchanan - knotted the contest. Buchanan exited after five frames, three hits and six strikeouts.

Matzek, who gave way to Corey Riordan for the fifth, permitted three hits, walked five and recorded five strikeouts over 80 pitches.  Riordan went on to retire nine of 10.

Tulsa (1-4) forged ahead 3-2 during the sixth, Kent Matthes' initial homer a two-out bomb to left-center off Double-A newcomer Carlos Quevedo.

Corpus Christi lost a scoring chance in the eighth. Springer stroked a one-out double to the gap in left-center, but was retired center fielder Cleary to shortstop Christhian Adames to third baseman Wong as he attempted to stretch the play into a triple. Burgess followed by doubling to right-center.

Tuesday's series and homestand finale features a pair of right-handers as Bobby Doran (0-0) meets Dan Houston (0-1) at 7:05.
