STARBASE-Atlantis Academy Could Be Target of Budget Cuts

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Future astronauts, scientists and engineers gathered Friday at STARBASE-Atlantis at the Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi.

Fifth-grade students from Gibson Elementary spent the day learning about science, technology, engineering and math -- all key subjects that educators say will help ensure a successful future workforce.

The STARBASE-Atlantis Academy located at NAS-Corpus Christi is one of four such schools in Texas, and one of 60 in the nation. The facility has helped teach and inspire more than 6,000 students over the last seven years.

However, the program could be among the many being considered by the Obama Administration as targets for budget cuts. The local program director said that would be a mistake, simply because of its success rate.

"We make a positive impact on kids everyday that we have come into the classroom," STARBASE Academy Director Crystal Trujillo said. "We have teachers who tell us 'Wow, I didn't know my students could do that,' and I have teachers who say, 'That child has never sat still for that long for anything in my classroom. Thank you.'"

The Science, Engineering, Technology and Math program was started back in 2006 and was brought to Corpus Christi by former Congressman Solomon Ortiz.
