Local Runners Returning Home Safe from Boston Marathon

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Some of our local runners are heading home Tuesday, flying out of the Boston airport, after attending Monday's Boston Marathon.

One local runner from Rockport, Jake Perez, was lucky enough to have finished the race about one hour after the blast, and now he is on his way home safely. However, he said the city of Boston woke up stronger than it was on Monday.

"Something so horrible like this brings people closer together like never before, regardless if they are from Boston, or Texas, or any other state," Perez said. "You see how people reach out and comfort each other."

Another Corpus Christi resident, Ruben Garcia, was up in Boston to support his friend Donny Patterson, who was running in the Marathon. Garcia said security at the airport was pretty tight on Tuesday. They even stopped them at the gate with questions.

"Homeland Security was asking us questions there at the gate," Garcia said. "If it would have been any other situation, I don't think they would have been there to ask questions, or if we had photos to share with them."

Most of the local racers are expected to return home late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.
