A former Corpus Christi city manager and council member was honored with the Island University's most prestigious award on Wednesday.

"It's a great honor to be recognized by the people you respect and work with," said Ed Martin, President and CEO of Berry Contracting. "It's pretty awesome."

Martin was honored Wednesday with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's G. Russell Kirkland Award.

Many remember Martin as a Corpus Christi city manager. Now, he's the president and CEO of Berry Contracting, which is based here in Corpus Christi and employs over 3,500 people.

Martin talked to many of the students, passing on his wisdom and saying that, in life, you must adapt, be risk takers and be ethical in all that you do. He is the 14th recipient of the award, which honors service to the University, Corpus Christi and South Texas.
