Man Charged in Chase that Resulted in Crash at NAS-Kingsville

KLEBERG COUNTY (Kiii News) -

A man has been charged with transporting 14 illegal immigrants and leading officers on a high-speed chase that left seven dead and one in critical condition back in March.

Idelfonso Garcia-Benitez, 20, of Michoacan, Mexico, has been charged with one count of conspiring to transport illegal immigrants, 14 counts of transporting illegal immigrants and one count of illegal reentry after deportation.

According to investigators, Garcia-Benitez led Kingsville police on a high-speed chase that later resulted in a crash at Naval Air Station-Kingsville. Seven people were killed, and one remains in critical condition.

Garcia-Benitez was arrested on the scene. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison and a possible $250,000.
