Police Respond to Bomb Scare at Local MHMR Facility

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Employees at a behavioral facility located on the 1600 block of Brownlee had a bomb scare on Friday.

According to workers at the Behavioral Health Center of Nueces County, commonly known to Corpus Christi locals as MHMR, a 38-year old man went into the facility with a backpack and said it was going to go off.

The threat was taken very seriously, and the building was evacuated. Kiii News Reporter Anayeli Ruiz went Live from the scene with more details.

The entire street was closed off for several hours as a precaution after the man went into the MHMR office. The staff acted immediately and pulled the fire alarm  to evacuate the building, just to make sure that everyone was safe.

911 was called, but the man lever left the scene. Officers showed up, saw the man and grabbed him. As he was being questioned, the Corpus Christi Police Department Bomb Squad was called in to check the backpack and make sure there was no danger.

MHMR officials said they frequently practice bomb threat drills, just to be on the safe side.

"They have practiced this, and I am very pleased with their response," said Diane Lowrance, executive director of the Behavioral Center.

MHMR did notify their immediate neighbors to make sure that everyone knew what to do and was aware of what was going on.

No one was hurt in the incident, and the man did cooperate with police, who believe it was all a misunderstanding. The man denied saying anything of the sort. He was taken for an evaluation of his mental condition and then released. The man did not have a violent history.

As of right now, the 38-year old man is not facing charges. It all could be just a misunderstanding, but that does not mean that police will not file charges later.
