Courthouse Holds Ceremony for National Crime Victims Rights Week

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

This week, the Coalition for Crime Victims' Rights is remembering victims of crime and their families, all as part of National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

"The pain does go on, and this is to represent what they went through and where they have come since then," said Shae McFarlin of the Corpus Christi Police Department's Victim Assistance Program.

At the Nueces County Courthouse Monday morning, county officials kicked off the remembrance week by unveiling several wreaths that will be placed on display.

Vilma Garcia, who lost her daughter to murder back in 2008, was in attendance, as well as 25-year old Danielle Vargas was killed by an estranged boyfriend who followed her to Houston and shot her.

"It's going to be five years in June, and everyday is a hard day," Garcia said. "To try and get up in the morning and know that she is not coming back to me. I miss her a lot."

Back in November of 2009, Charles Bryant was given a life sentence for the murder of Garcia's daughter.

National Crime Victims' Rights Week runs from April 21-26, and there will be local events held throughout. Here's a schedule of those events:

Tuesday, April 23 - Proclamation at City Hall.

Wednesday, April 24 - "Denim Day."

Thursday, April 25 - Awards Ceremony from 6-9 p.m. in the main lobby of Nueces County Courthouse.

Friday, April 26 - Drivers nationwide drive with car lights turned on.
