Judge Rejects Plea Bargain in Intoxication Manslaughter Case

Posted: Updated:
SAN PATRICIO COUNTY (Kiii News) -

It was a dramatic day at the San Patricio County Courthouse Thursday, as a woman on trial for intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault entered her plea.

It was a plea that one of the victim's family members were not happy with.

"I feel like this is not right. This is a very wrong, what they are doing," said Jessica Dominguez, the mother of Celeste Rae Gauna. "This is not justice at all."

Gauna, 18, was in the a Volkswagen that was allegedly struck by Hannah Roberts' car back on Aug. 31 of 2012. It happened on I-37 near Mathis.

Roberts was seriously injured in the accident, and a passenger in her vehicle was killed, as well as Gauna and the driver of the Volkswagen she was in. Department of Public Safety troopers said Roberts was intoxicated at the time and driving at a high rate of speed.

On Thursday, Roberts entered a guilty plea that would have seen her sentenced to 10 years in prison, but be eligible for parole after two and a half years. However, the judge rejected that plea.

The family of Celeste Gauna was not happy that the deal was even offered to begin with.

"So what do we do now," said Veronica Alvarado, Gauna's grandmother. "I think of millions of things, you know."

Roberts, who is currently out on bond, is set to stand trial in June on three counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault.
