Hooks Put Brooms to Work in 4-Game Sweep of Midland

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - The Corpus Christi Hooks put 10 runs on the board and rolled to a rare 4-game sweep of Midland with a 10-4 win on Friday night at Whataburger Field.

George Springer hit his 9th HR of the season to get things underway in the bottom of the 1st inning as the Hooks upped their record to 17-11 through the first month of the Texas League season.

Matt Heidenreich improved to 2-2 by posting five frames of shutout relief. He allowed single hits in the fifth and sixth, walked one and struck out three.

Springer's Texas League-leading ninth home run of the year - a two-out shot to left in the first - gave the Hooks a 1-0 advantage. The Astros No. 3 prospect finished Friday a triple shy of the cycle.

The RockHound response was swift, as Dusty Coleman's lead-off double quickly translated to a 1-1 contest. Coleman took third when Chad Oberacker laid down a sacrifice bunt and home on third baseman Jonathan Meyer's errant throw across the diamond.

Midland starter Josh Bowman then pitched himself into deep trouble, walking three of the first four Hooks during a five-run, three-hit second. Jiovanni Mier drew a bases-loaded walk, Austin Wates scored Zach Johnson with an infield hit, Orloff lifted a sacrifice fly to center and Springer cleared the bases with a double inside the bag at third.

Ruben Alaniz failed to maintain the comfort level, coughing up three on three hits in the third, Anthony Aliotti's double and Beau Taylor's two-run single the biggest blows. That was all for Alaniz after six hits, two walks and four strikeouts.

Wates, who stroked a stand-up, lead-off triple in the fourth, scored on Orloff's grounder to the right side for a 7-4 Hooks lead. Miles Head would have been Midland's fifth run in the fifth, but he was cut down by 10 feet at the plate for the final out, center fielder Springer to shortstop Mier to Max Stassi. Meyer made it 8-4 in the home half with an RBI single off Nate Long.

His troubles continued the next inning as Corpus Christi broke the affair wide open. Springer reached on a fielder's choice, was wild pitched to third and tallied on a passed ball. Michael Burgess delivered an RBI double, his second two-base hit of the night.

Bowman (2-1) went to the showers after four innings, seven runs, seven hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Long, charged with three runs, five hits and two wild pitches, gave way to Carlos Fisher for the seventh.

Orloff has reached base in 22 consecutive games.
