Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii Sports) - Santa Gertrudis' five seniors had one last chance to get over the hump, and make it to the state tournament, and that's exactly what they did Thursday by beating Refugio 8-4 at Cabaniss Field.

The Lady Lions lead from start to finish after Refugio committed four errors. Santa Gertrudis got on the board in the 1st with a two run single from senior Maranda Gonzalez.

Lady Lions' freshman Kristen Gonzalez later added a two run bases-loaded single in the 5th to pad Santa Gertrudis' lead to 5-2.

Santa Gertrudis carried an 8-2 lead to the bottom of the 7th, but Refugio's Cecilia Bauer would not let her team go down without a fight. Bauer lined a RBI triple and scored on the same play on a throwaway to trim the lead to 8-4. Bauer also had a solo homerun earlier in the game.

SGA Senior Carla Noel would not be denied her spot at state, getting a strikeout swinging to end the game and send the LAdy Lions to Austin next week. Santa Gertrudis will play at in the 2A State Semifinals at UT's McCombs Field on Wednesday ay either 3 p.m. or 6 p.m.
