CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - C.J. Cron drove in five runs and Brandon Hynick allowed one run over six frames as Arkansas beat Corpus Christi 8-6 Sunday at Whataburger Field before 6,843.
The Travelers snapped a five-game losing streak and the Hooks fell for the first time in five nights.
Hynick (4-3) surrendered a run on two hits in the first and threw blanks the rest of the way, retiring 14 straight. He walked two, struck out four and 52 of his 87 pitches were strikes.
Domingo Santana's two-out single plated Jiovanni Mier, giving Carlos Quevedo and the Hooks (29-20) a 1-0 first-inning advantage. Mier opened by sharply singling through the pitcher's box and an out later took third on Hynick's wild pitch.
Arkansas rode the long ball to a 4-1 lead in the third. Singles from Rolando Gomez and Kaleb Cowart set the stage for Cron's blast off the left-field cotton press. Randal Grichuk's eighth home run sent patrons on the left field berm scattering.
Quevedo (1-4) induced a double play ball to escape the third, but was pulled in favor of Andrew Robinson. Quevedo was peppered for eight hits over 43 pitches.
Robinson fared no better as the Travelers (25-23) erupted for three runs on four hits during the fourth. Cron stroked a two-out, two-run double and Grichuk added an RBI single.
Corpus Christi mounted a five-run rally in the eighth, batting around against Nick Maronde and Josh Judy. Ben Orloff keyed the uprising with a two-run single, George Springer contributed a run-scoring hit and Santana produced a sacrifice fly.
Maronde walked two Hooks who came around to score and a third run reached on third baseman Cowart's fielding miscue.
Judy walked a tightrope to earn his initial save of the season. He achieved the final five outs, wriggling out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth.
Arkansas out-hit the Hooks 15-6.
The series and homestand conclude Monday at 4:05 as Corpus Christi's Nick Tropeano (0-3) faces Matt Oye (4-3). Mrs Baird's presents Dollar Hot Dogs and Soda.
