There are a lot of new businesses opening up or under construction in Corpus Christi, but along restaurant row, there might be a bit of confusion.
B&J's Pizza is getting calls about a new business coming into town -- the California-based BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse.
The company is now constructing its newest addition right in front of Home Depot on SPID, and the similar names are causing confusion among B&J's Pizza's longtime customers.
"Well actually, it was kind of a surprise to me," said Chris Baker, owner of B&J's Pizza. "I'd never paid attention. I drive by that sign every day. Up until then, I didn't even realize. I had a friend call me from another company asking me, 'Hey, are you guys opening up a new restaurant in front of Home Depot?' And I said not that I'm aware of."
B&J's Pizza has been open for business for 27 years, at its original location on SPID and a newer location on South Staples. The business was opened by one family and then sold to Baker's parents. They ran it, and subsequently passed it on to Baker after they retired.
Throughout the years, Baker said the locally owned pizza place has built a reputation of being an established business with deep local roots, and that, he says, will remind customers the difference between the two.
"Corpus Christi supports local. They love the local idea, if it's a family. My family and I have been here. I started working here when I was in high school, with my mom and dad, and it's grown as a family. Our customers are our family, and people in Corpus really take to that."
Baker said they welcome new business and new growth to Corpus Christi, adding that he is confident B&J's Pizza customers will remain loyal.
BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse is set to open later this fall.
