Moody Wins Two To Head Back to State For First Time in Four Years

Posted: Updated:

SAN ANTONIO (Kiii Sports) - The storied "Moody Magic" was on full display in San Antonio Saturday, as the Trojans beat Alamo Heights twice to come back in their series and advance to the state tournament in Round Rock for the first time since 2009.

Sophomore Aaron Hernandez was one of the heroes of the day for Moody, knocking in six runs in a 9-2 Game 2 win for the Trojans. Hernandez then tossed a complete game on the mound in Moody's state-clinching win by a final of 5-2 in Game 3.

Moody jumped out to a 4-0 lead in that third and decisive game in the 4th inning after Michael Cantu skied a fly ball to center that was off the glove of the Mules' centerfielder. All three runners came home on what would have been the final out of the inning.

Alamo Heights trimmed the lead with a couple of runs in the top of the 3rd, but Moody added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning when J.D. Garcia's infield hit brought home Johnny Gonzalez.

Game 1 starter Kenny Saenz warmed up before the 7th inning with Moody leading 5-2, but it was Hernandez who ultimately shut the door, getting at grounder to shortstop to end it and send the Trojans back to state.

Moody is heading back to Round Rock for the first time since 2009, when the Trojans fell in the title game to Texarkana.

The Trojans will play Whitehouse out of Region II in the 4A State Semifinals Thursday at Dell Diamond at 7 p.m.
