23 Arrests as Result of San Patricio County Gameroom Crackdown
SAN PATRICIO COUNTY (Kiii News) -
Nearly $143,000 was seized from 8-liner gameroom machines by the San Patricio County Sheriff's Department, and lots of people are now facing charges.
Some 23 people have been arrested so far, and more arrests are still to come. 11 were arrested Friday night, three turned themselves in Wednesday night and nine more turned themselves in Thursday, surrendering to arrest warrants.
They face charges of engaging in organized criminal activity, keeping a gambling place, possession of gambling equipment, and gambling promotion.
Sheriff Leroy Moody sent out a warning letter to the gamerooms in the county in February. After that, some voluntarily shut down, but others remained opened. Then, on Friday night, the Sheriff's Department launched a raid, shutting down eight gamerooms and seizing the machines.
Sheriff Moody said the rest of the gamerooms have either since shut down or moved out of the county, and as far as he knows, as of Thursday morning, there are no more gamerooms open in San Patricio County.
The sheriff said that there may be as many 20 more people that are still out there that will be arrested.
