Coastal Bend Natives Return from Devastated Home in Moore, Okla.

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A Carroll High School graduate and his girlfriend, a native of Beeville, were living in Moore, Okla., when that deadly tornado struck last month. Their home was destroyed.

This weekend, the couple is back in the Coastal Bend. Their friends are hosting a fundraiser for them to help them rebuild.

"There is still lots of destruction there. We still have to wait on the city to clean up," said Tim Hearne, who lost his home in the Moore tornado. "Really, if you want to start rebuilding, you couldn't. You're waiting for the city until you have a clear lot. Until you can explore those options a little bit more."

"Yeah, my house is broken," said Ethan, Tim Hearne and Chelsie McCumber's two-year old son.

Hearne's former classmates at Carroll High School announced a couple of weeks ago that they will hold a fundraiser to help their friends rebuild. It will be held this weekend, and the family is very grateful.

Hearne was at work when the EF-5 tornado hit. McCumber and Ethan were hiding in a closet at their home.

"I've witnessed many tornadoes. Never been in one until this one, and I just stayed calm for my son," McCumber said. "He kept me calm. All my focus was on him when all this was going on."

The barbecue and raffle fundraiser to help Hearne and his family rebuild will go on from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, at the New Song Fellowship Church on Holly Road. For more information, call 361-877-4998.
