Stassi's Slam Powers Hooks Over Cardinals

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - Max Stassi belted a grand slam and tied a club record with eight runs batted in to lead Corpus Christi to a 13-1 win over Springfield in front of 4,070 fans at Whataburger Field Wednesday night.

Stassi recorded the second eight-RBI night for the Hooks in 2013, following Michael Burgess' effort May 13 against San Antonio.

Corpus Christi jumped in front of the Cardinals with two long balls in the second inning. Burgess hit his 10th home run of the season to right field with one out, then the Hooks loaded the bases on two infield hits and a walk against Springfield starter Richard Castillo. Stassi followed with a line drive grand slam to straight away centerfield, his second bomb of the season, to put the Hooks in front 5-0.

The drive marked Corpus Christi's second grand slam of the season, following George Springer's on May 27 against Arkansas.

Corpus Christi (4-3, 46-31) scored six more times in the third inning. Drew Muren drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Stassi plated two more with a double down the left field line and Castro doubled home Stassi to chase Castillo (5-4) from the game. The Cardinals' starter allowed 10 earned runs, his highest total of the season, on 10 hits and two walks.

Corey Baker followed Castillo on the mound and promptly gave up a two-run home run to Jonathan Meyer to give the Hooks an 11-0 advantage.

To put the exclamation point on Stassi's night, Enrique Hernandez walked to start the fifth inning and Stassi followed with a monster home run to left field to extend the lead to 13. The homer gave the Corpus Christi catcher his fourth hit of the night, a career-high.

Meanwhile, Hooks starting pitcher Ruben Alaniz (4-7) zipped through six shutout innings, while he allowed five hit and struck out one.

Springfield (4-3, 37-38) scored its lone run off reliever Kenny Long on a Tyler Rahmatulla RBI single in the eighth inning.

The Astros promoted outfielder Preston Tucker from Advanced-A Lancaster to Corpus Christi before Wednesday's game. The University of Florida product went one-for-five in his Double-A debut, adding to the Hooks' total of 17, a season-high.

The Hooks and Cardinals square off again Thursday at 7:05, with a pair of southpaws on the mound. Springfield's Jonathan Cornelius (0-2, 5.93) against Corpus Christi's Kyle Hallock (0-0, -.--).

We headed out to Labonte Park, one of the most popular camp sites on this Easter Sunday to see how families there were enjoying the day! The park located just off I-37 was filled with families camping out. People have been camping out all week just to make sure they got a good spot! The weather was definitely in their favor. It seems no one was safe from the cascarones, as some of the campers organized an attack on our very own kiii camera man, Jay Pena.More >>
