Shots Fired at Officers During Police Chase in Jim Wells County

Posted: Updated:
ORANGE GROVE (Kiii News) -

Gunshots rang out in Jim Wells County early Friday morning during a wild police chase. Authorities were originally responding to a 911 call for an attempted suicide.

When police arrived at the home the 911 call came from, they said a man took off in his truck and led them on the chase, during which he allegedly fired shots at police units and even at a random vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

The chase came to an end at an apartment complex in Orange Grove when the man crashed his truck into an SUV. Authorities were then able to apprehend 20-year old Preston Wright.

Police said the original 911 call that came into dispatch was from Wright's fiance, claiming that Wright was going to kill himself.

Strangely enough, there was a deer in the bed of the pickup truck. Authorities said Wright had hit and killed the deer, and threw it in the back of the pickup truck before any officers were out there.

Wright has been booked at the County Jail on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of evading arrest and two counts of attempted capital murder.

As for the random driver, he had superficial wounds to the face, but is reportedly okay. Police involved in the chase were also okay.
