A long time educator and high school basketball coach has been laid to rest.
Coach Vance Heard was remembered Tuesday by family and close friends at Seaside Memorial. Heard past away over the weekend after battling prostate cancer. For roughly 20-years, Coach Heard worked with area youth at Miller High School. His sons say he made a lasting impression on everyone.
"It's impossible to put a number on it the number of lives he's touched," said OJ Heard. "The response, the support that we've gotten as a family has been... it's nothing that we expected."
"You know you're talking about people from the 70s. Grandfathers, Grandmothers, Mothers, Dads, their children, said Michael Goines. "He's touched so many people, so many ways. It's amazing."
A public celebration of Coach Heard's life is planned Saturday, July 6 at the Oveal Williams Senior Center starting at 2 p.m. Coach Heard was 85-years-old.
