20 Illegal Immigrants Flee Vehicle After Routine Traffic Stop

Posted: Updated:

A routine traffic stop early Thursday morning led to a bailout of suspected illegal immigrants in Nueces County.

According to the Nueces County Sheriff's Department, about 20 suspected illegal immigrants fled from a vehicle between Robstown and Driscoll around 6:30 a.m., after a Sheriff's deputy tried to pull their vehicle over for a traffic violation at County Road 28 and Highway 77.

The vehicle pulled over on the shoulder of County Road 24, and the suspected illegal immigrants bailed out and ran. Authorities said the vehicle's occupants were covered with a tarp in the bed of the pickup truck, and some were in the passenger cab. They reportedly ran out across the railroad tracks and into a nearby field.

The Sheriff's Department were unable to locate any of the suspected immigrants.

Authorities returned to the scene at around 1:15 p.m. and spotted five of the suspected immigrants near Driscoll, at Highway 77 and FM 665. Three were taken into custody, and two got away.

The rest of the illegal immigrants that bailed out of their vehicle early in the morning are still at large, and the U.S. Border Patrol has not offered any comment about the incident.
