Two Streets to Be Named in Honor of Police Captain, Late Citizen

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A Corpus Christi Police Department captain said he is honored that a couple of southside streets will be named after him and a late local citizen for their courage and bravery.

Local homebuilder Braselton Homes is recognizing Captain Russell "Russ" Sherman and the late Winston Lawrence "W.L." Breeding by naming two streets after them. W.L. Breeding Drive will intersect with Russ Lane.

It was November of 2004 when Breeding, a Corpus Christi citizen, Vietnam veteran and retired Arlington police officer, lost his life while trying to aid then patrolman Sherman in pursuing a bank robbery suspect.

"He gave the ultimate sacrifice trying to aid me with that situation, and I think it's a great honor for him and for his family," Sherman said. "His family lost a lot that day, so it's an honor for me to know that he's being honored, and that my name will be associated with his."

The street naming ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday in the 7700 block of Slough Road, behind Zachary Kolda Elementary.
