Hooks Make It 6 Straight With 5-2 Win Over Frisco

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks)- Corpus Christi's three-run sixth vaulted the Hooks past Frisco in a 5-2 victory Thursday before 5,460 at Whataburger Field.

The Hooks, 11-9 in the second half of Texas League play, have won a season-best six straight and stand 53-37 overall. Frisco is 7-13 and 46-44.

Michael Burgess and Rene Garcia were the hitting stars, Burgess with a two-run double during the decisive surge and Garcia falling a home run shy of the cycle.

A pair of second-inning wild pitches by Ruben Alaniz led to the night's first run. Frisco designated hitter Alex Buchholz drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a ball in the dirt. After taking third when Chih-Hsien Chiang grounded out, Buchholz immediately recognized another short delivery and hustled home.

Drew Muren's head-first slide around the tag of catcher Tomas Telis pulled Corpus Christi even an inning later. Muren walked and sprinted to the keystone via Arlett Mavare's wild pitch. The Hooks' center fielder achieved third on a heads-up tag-up in the wake of Enrique Hernandez' deep drive to left. Garcia picked up the RBI, his fielder's choice swinging bunt to Mavare creating Muren's window to the plate.

Frisco moved back up by a run during the fifth, Chiang's opening infield single immediately preceding a triple to right-center from Hanser Alberto.

Burgess' two-run double to the deepest part of the ballpark - 407 feet just right of the batter's eye - pushed Corpus Christi up 3-2. Garcia's lead-off triple and a four-pitch, two-out walk of Zach Johnson by reliever Richard Bleier (1-4) set the stage. Raoul Torrez' single then scored Burgess.

The RoughRiders threatened in the seventh, chasing Alaniz in the process. They left the bases loaded against reliever Andrew Robinson. He struck out Ryan Strausborger and coaxed an inning-ending ground ball from Greg Miclat.

Alaniz (5-7) navigated 6 1/3 innings, six hits, two walks and four strikeouts. Mavare, limited to five innings and 77 pitches, permitted four hits, walked one and struck out five.

Hernandez jacked his seventh homer of the campaign to provide a three-run cushion through seven. Jorge De Leon notched his fourth save, a four-out job.
