Hooks Drop Another Extra Innings Game to Frisco

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (CC Hooks) - Alex Buchholz' one-out double to right-center scored Brett Nicholas from second base, lifting Frisco past Corpus Christi 4-3 in 11 innings Saturday at Whataburger Field before 6,365.

Nicholas opened the frame by drawing a walk from Jorge De Leon (0-3) and was sacrificed into scoring position by Tomas Telis.

Kyle McClellan, who worked three innings, earned his first win of 2013 and Richard Bleier notched his third save.

Saturday's affair was tight from the start and remained tight late.

Taking advantage of Frisco starter Tyler Tufts' exit from the game, Corpus Christi (11-11; 53-39) struck for two in the seventh. Domingo Santana stroked a one-out single up the middle and advanced 180 feet when Michael Burgess doubled to left. An out later, Drew Muren provided the night's first runs with a ground-rule double into the left-center field bullpen.

That turn of events woke up the RoughRiders (9-13; 48-44), who put up three eighth-inning runs on four hits and an error. Odubel Herrera (lead-off single) scored when Santana misplayed a ball in right. Nicholas pushed across the tying run on a sacrifice fly, Telis the go-ahead marker by doubling to right.

Jonathan Meyer's 12th home run - a blast to left off McClellan - knotted the contest at 3 in the home half, forcing extra innings for the third time in the series.

Corpus Christi's David Martinez and Tufts threw blanks at each other through the first six innings. Frisco's first hit - a one-out single to right-center by Telis - was part of a no-run, three-hit fourth. The rally short-circuited when Buchholz was struck near the second-base bag by Chih-Hsien Chiang's dead-ball base hit.

Martinez tired during the eighth, lifted for Patrick Urckfitz after 7 1/3 innings, six hits, three walks and two strikeouts. He threw 86 pitches (58 strikes). Urckfitz was on the hook until Meyer's heroics.

Tufts spanned six innings in just 69 pitches, 49 of which were strikes. He scattered four hits, walked one and struck out three.

Rene Garcia has a seven-game hitting streak for the Hooks. Buchholz ran his streak to nine.

The Hooks travel to Midland for four Sunday through Wednesday. Nick Tropeano (3-6) pitches for Corpus Christi against lefty Carlos Hernandez (4-7) at 6 p.m. in the opener.
