Killeen Police Mourn the Loss of an Officer to a Shootout
KILLEEN, Texas (Kiii News) - The law enforcement community in Killeen, Texas, is mourning the loss of a police officer who was killed in a shootout over the weekend.
Two Killeen police officers were involved in a shootout with a man who was armed with an AK-47 on Saturday night. The man, appearing to surrender, went back into his apartment and reemerged, firing and hitting the two police officers. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect.
Both officers were rushed to a nearby Army Medical Center in critical condition. One of the officers was pronounced dead a short time later.
"We're all grieving. The family's grieving," said Carroll Smith of the Killeen Police Department. "You know, we've got a great officer that is going to be deeply, deeply missed. A good guy. A good officer. A good husband. Good son, good brother."
The other officer who was injured in the shootout is listed in stable condition following a surgery. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.
