Firefighters, Supporters Voice Staffing Concerns to City Council

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Last week's house explosion has given ammunition to those who are asking City Council to budget for the hiring of more firefighters.

Kiii News Reporter Brian Burns went Live from City Hall, where residents say that less than four men per fire engine is not safe for firefighters, no citizens.

Firefighters and their supporters say that four firefighters are needed to properly staff both ambulances and fire engines. With new ambulances scheduled to go into service next month, they say the Corpus Christi Fire Department will have to pull firefighters from those engines to staff the ambulances.

Last week, City Council told the Firefighters Union that there simply wasn't enough money to add the four positions; but on Tuesday, residents and firefighters lined up to make their case to Council, including one resident who said the City was being foolish.

"We need to think about what the residents of Corpus Christi really need, in case another house blows up," concerned resident Gayle Moon said.

"Firefighters are leaving to other, better jobs, to other cities, and that's going to cut down more firefighters," said Tony Jimenez of the Corpus Christi Fire Department. "So I'm hoping that you all support the firefighters."

Tuesday was the first reading of next year's budget, and it is scheduled to be voted on for a final time before the end of the month.
