Corpus Christi City Council Votes Against Hiring More Firefighters

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Corpus Christi City Council voted against hiring more firefighters to address an EMS shortage. Jim Devisser with the Firefighter's Union says fewer members on an engine presents a true safety issue.

"Having a three person engine company is the bare minimum to what you can get done, what you have to do... bare minimum."

The fire department says they need to staff 100 firefighters every day. Currently, they are short four.

"What we're wondering is where did that money go? The city is using it elsewhere," said Devisser. "If the fire department saved the citizens, that $1.2 million dollars should have been left where it should have been."

Councilwoman Pricilla Leal pushed to amend the budget for additional firefighter staff, but never received a second motion. One of the amendments passed Tuesday included a little more than a 2% raise for the city manger.
